The 5 ways to wellbeing

Created by the New Economics Foundation, the 5 ways to wellbeing helps us to embed 5 actions into our day to day lives which looks to improve our mental wellbeing.

  1. Connect with the people around you. With family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. At home, work in school in your local community. Building these connections will support and enrich you every day. 

 

  1. Be active, go for a walk or run, step outside, cycle, play a game, garden, dance, exercise makes you feel good.

 

  1. Take notice, be curious, catch sight of the beautiful. Remark on the unusual and notice the changing seasons. Savour the moment, be aware of the world around you and what you are feeling. Reflecting on your experiences will help you appreciate what matters to you.

 

  1. Keep learning and try something new. Rediscover an old interest or sign up for that course. Take a different responsibility at work or fix a bike. Learning new things will make you more confident as well as being fun.

 

  1. Give by doing something nice for a friend or a stranger. Thank someone, smile, volunteer your time. Seeing yourself and your happiness linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding and creates connections with the people around you.

Looking out for the signs and symptoms of poor mental health

Everyone is different and mental health problems show themselves in different ways however, the following signs and symptoms are common indicators that someone may be experiencing emotional or mental health problems.

  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Changes in appetite
  • Feeling low, sad or anxious
  • Feeling hopeless, helpless and negative
  • Loss of interest in things that you are usually interested in
  • Feeling tired, lethargic or having no energy
  • Difficulties in concentrating and making choices
  • Morbid thoughts of death or suicide
  • Restlessness and irritability

 

Time to Change

Time to Change is a growing social movement working to change the way we all think and act about mental health problems. It has already reached millions of people and begun to improve attitudes and behaviour. Swindon has now been granted Time to Change status as local providers have come together to raise awareness collectively across the town.

Time to Change Swindon are also committed to working in partnership to support four campaigns a year; Suicide Prevention Day, World Mental Health Day, Time to Talk Day and Mental Health Awareness Week.

Time to Change Champions are people with lived experience of mental health problems who campaign to end mental health discrimination in their communities. The Champions network is an opportunity to meet likeminded, learn more about Time to Change National and get involved in campaigns in Swindon. This is a very flexible role that can fit around your other commitments.

You as a professional:

Local Businesses can sign up to the Time to Change Employer Pledge joining a growing movement of over 900 employers in England. When you sign the Employer Pledge you demonstrate your commitment to change how we think and act about mental health in the workplace and make sure that employees who are facing these problems feel supported. This would include individual sole traders and businesses registered with Companies House.

Workplace Champions are people that do not necessarily have lived experience of mental health problems, but are passionate about supporting their workplace to reduce stigma and discrimination around mental health. This is a very flexible role that can fit around your other commitments.
