Swindon Children’s Occupational Therapy

Children’s occupational therapy service in Swindon is part of the Paediatric Therapy Team, working with social care occupational therapists and physiotherapists.

The purpose of the paediatric occupational therapy service is to enable children and young people to participate in daily activities to improve their independence and wellbeing. Daily activities for children may include self-care (dressing, eating a meal, using the toilet or making a snack, being productive). For example, activities at school, handwriting and using a pen and leisure, being able to participate in play and participate in chosen hobbies.

We assess children and young people to identify their strengths and identify what the child would like to achieve or improve.

Who do we see?

We work with children and young people:

  • who are 0-18 years
  • have a Swindon GP
  • have an identified difficulty with every day (functional) activity in the areas of self-care, play/leisure or school activities.

Occupational Therapy can be provided up until 19 years of age in specialist educational settings.

We also work closely with special educational settings and currently provide occupational therapy in school to several special schools and specialist resourced provision within mainstream schools.

Appointments:

Preparing for your appointment

It’s useful to bring any relevant documentation about the child’s/young person’s development.

Prior to the appointment it is useful to think about what your concerns are and what you would like you child to improve.

Your first appointment will be held at The Salt Way Centre. The appointment usually lasts between 60 – 90 minutes. The occupational therapist will ask about the child’s development, any current or past medical problems and the difficulty the child is currently experiencing when participating in daily activities.
